Playstation 4

After seeing the 2 hour preview that was done at 3pm PST (and yes i tried to watch the whole thing, even though Sony's feed crashed at parts), is going to revolutionize the Gaming world.  Just some of the concepts that came out for the games seemed amazing.  I am not too into the move, and I don't know anyone who has one... but with some of the options that will possibly come out it might be fun... especially if they are updating it much like the dual shock 4 controller that has a 3d distance sensor...  if you were going to update that, imagine what could be done to play fencing games... Just as an example.. the game would be able to tell where you were in the room and more accurately judge your strikes.  so you could use this for a rerelease of medieval, which will probably come out soon... Especially since Dan is one of the characters on the Playstation All-Stars game, which is basically just a copy of Smash brothers, but with Sony characters.

The other thing that could be done with something like this, is a more realistic first person shooter... Especially if they add multiple monitor capabilities, or even come up with some kind of Curved T.V. Screen... which knowing Sony is possibly in the works, since the resolution of the PS4 is DOUBLE what it is for the PS3.  Currently resolution is 1440 x 1080p... the PS4 is capable of 2880 by 2160.  The graphics processing unit, can do most of the computing for the PS4 as well, which means the CPU will deal with most of the run-time information, and AI functions for games.  Games in the next 3 years, i can imagine are going to be DRASTICALLY more difficult as the AI learns your playing patterns even faster than the PS3 is capable of, and adapting.  This will push Hardcore gamers to be much better and games than they are now.  I personally am very excited for the Playstation 4 even if it is not completely backwards compatible... I do expect that just like the Playstation 3, once there are enough games out on the system... it won't matter and your PS3 will be collecting dust, much like my PS2 was.

Evil Dead Games

So I am just going to Review all of them all at once, in order.  If you ever played Hail to the King, you will know how FRUSTRATING this game was... The coolest, but also hardest part about this game was the combo system.  If you didn't know that you needed to talk smack to kill the Deadites in this game, it was over.  This made the game VERY difficult at times.  For example without using it, it was almost impossible to kill some of the Deadites.  With it, there was one specific combo that you could do, that almost gauranteed item drops everytime you killed a deadite.  And if you never played this game, you DESPERATELY needed those items.

The opening Scene is in the Cabin, which was like a maze in the first place.  This game was true to Ash form if you really think about it though... talking smack, facing almost impossible odds, and trying to save the girl in the end.  The girl was actually supposed to be the girl he kisses at the end of Army of Darkness with red hair.  Bruce Campbell does do all the Voice over work for all of this game series which makes it pretty amazing.  The only game he doesn't do the voice over work for, is a little known Android O/S game, called Army of Darkness Defense.  The only reason he doesn't is all the Dialogue, is from the actual movie of Army of Darkness.  The most Difficult part of Hail to the king, was the lack of GAS for the Chainsaw, which you needed desperately. I never actually Beat this game it was so difficult, and that was just on easy.

Fistful of Boomstick, now this game was much more tolerable to play.  They did add a kind of "Grab" move with the chainsaw, and with unlimited gas for it... the game was much easier.  If you performed the "Grab" where he would lift them up, and just evicerate the enemy by letting the chainsaw run inside of them, spurting gallons of blood... most enemies could not withstand it.  The only other thing you needed was the musket pistol, which did insane amounts of damage and stunned enemies.  You were pretty much unstoppable at that point, but then they give you the 8 shot boomstick which really was just ridiculous.  at that point you should have had so many other rounds for the guns you had that you were just laying the deadite hordes to waste.

Next in the PS2 game series, was Evil Dead: Regeneration.  In this game you had a sidekick named sam who is voiced by Ted Raimi.  Brother of the Creator Sam Raimi and was also in the Xena/Hercules series as pretty much any extra they ever needed, and Joxar.  He has a new york accent, and is Half-deadite... so he can Regenerate himself as many times as needed, or as many times as you can creatively think of killing him...Which was half of the entertainment value of the game.  Personally for those of us who are the cult game fans... I wish this was rereleased as a PSN game, but i just don't see it happening.  Especially now with all the information that has come out from Sony about the PS4 and the LACK of backwards compatibility... this includes PSN games. (seems stupid to me).  I understand they are banking on people just moving on to the PS4 like they did from PS2 to PS3, but i don't think it will have as smooth of a transition.

The last Game is Army of Darkness Defense (that i have played, or KNOW OF).  This is a very simple game, but very fun.  You use the touch pad to move Ash left or right, and everything else is done automatically.  You can upgrade your troops and castle, and use the upgrades to help you defend the necronimicon from Evil Ash, just like the last scene in the movie.  This is a very simple game, and easy to master... and with the lines from Army of Darkness, put a fresh spin on a cult classic.  This game seems to be just in time for the remake of Evil Dead, which I am sure will have people on the edge of their seats like the original did in the early 80s.

Strong Bad's Cool Game... (SBCG4AP)

I don't know if you are a fan of Strong Bad, and www.Homestarrunner.com   I personally did not start hearing about til about 5 years ago... at that time, they were still making new videos... which they are no longer doing sadly.  But I bought this game probably about 2 years ago when they rereleased it for the PS3.  I bought all 5 games in the season pass pack.  This game is actually pretty funny.  It isn't  complicated by any stretch... I completed the game in like an hour... all you need to do is talk to everyone... and if you use the walk through you could probably get everything on any episode in under two hours.... including playing the mini-games. which include... "Math Kickers featuring the Algebros" (double dragon rip off involving math equations that you DON't do).  "Snake Puncher" (a rip-off of atari 2600 boxing). and several others including a rip-off of megaman, T&C surf, and even the ever classic... king's quest are all involved in this game series.

So if you are looking to have a few laughs... and a game that REALLY isn't that hard, and just waste some time to try and relax and make fun of people at the same time.  this is a great game.  not a 10 by any stretch, more like a 7.5 and that is only because of the dialogue from Strong Bad.

Side Note

I am trying to get caught up on some reviews, so i may MASH reviews for several games in a series into one review... like for example, i need to write a DEATHSPANK review... i am not going to write a review of EACH game... there are 3 games, and i have over 150 games that i own JUST FOR PS3, that i Plan on reviewing.  so I will review them, all at once... like for example... Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People... it is a 5 game series, I will just review all 5 games, at once.

Vanquish

This is the New PS plus game for this week.  I love this game.  I am a little disappointed that I already owned the disc based version of the game, but i have learned recently... I am REALLY lazy when it comes to playing games.  I love being able to not get up when i want to switch games quickly.  I personally will look through my library of HDD games, before i look on my rack for games to play.  There is still a reason i buy disc based games... COST!  Wait 6months to a year and most are down $20-$30.  Like Mortal Kombat... on the PSN store the KOMPLETE EDITION is still $39.99.  added to my library via disc based. $15.  The advantages to HDD games are, if they get corrupted... delete the game data and start fresh. Which with disc-based... if your disc gets warped from playing a game too much (that is my copy of fallout: new vegas most-likely honestly)  and it is just plain messed up, and there is not much you can do.

SO on that note, to have a back-up of a game that I love playing and don't want messed up, I purchased the FREE PS plus copy of Vanquish.  Would be cooler if i got something else, but nonetheless still a great game.

It is basically a standard 3rd person shooter with a few nuances... you are in a exo-suit so you have a rocket pack on your back which you can use to boost yourself into cover... like that feature.  you can also use the suit to dodge, then holding L1, you can slow down time to hit multiple targets at once.  This suit also regenerates your health, but it does overheat. so it isn't like you are invincible.  You do die... and i assure you playing it on hard my first time through... i have.  Yes. you heard that right.  I play video games a lot. and because of that I normally start games on hard.  There are very Few games, that I do not... and that would be like... Castlevania, or Lost Planet 2 since you get to level 1-2 on hard, and you cannot defeat the boss.  you just don't have the firepower, since the game is designed for infinite replay.  On vanquish, I have only gotten to 2-2, but part of that is because i am going for the achievement (don't die on any difficulty) which happens to make me leave the game when i die and go to the title screen.  Especially since any of the other trophies i can go back and do over on easy if i REALLY wanted to just get trophies... which personally. i normally don't... I just play games for fun.  This is one game that doesn't lack in that.

Lost Planet 2

I like this game... it isn't GREAT, but it is fun.  There are a few things i don't like that capcom did... for instance... I CANNOT PAUSE THE GAME?! WHAT?!  Who came up with this idea... Seriously, my choices are to clean out the level and get pelted by rounds, (yes there are swarms of enemies) and kill my time for the level losing possibility for S rank, or complete the WHOLE chapter which takes an hour, or just... DIE. that is it?  if you play one player and host a game so that people can drop in, to a 4 player co-op game... you can get owned.  This is the main thing, that makes me rate it 7 out of 10.

Practice/ Training mode...

Practice on this game is HARD!  like seriously, i couldn't beat the first beginner obstacle course. and i play video games a LOT!  I thought this was supposed to be a TUTORIAL! how am I supposed to complete it, if it is that hard.  to me, that makes no sense.

Last downside...

I tried starting a game on Hard.  and if you have read my blog, you know that I start games on hard for fun.  I like to be challenged... well... this game is not set up that you can do that.  Because it is designed to customize weapons, and infinite replay-ability, i could not get past 1-2.  the Akrid you fight just doesn't take enough damage from your pee shooter... because that is what it feels like you are shooting at it.  I felt like i was shooting spit balls, at the neighborhood bully who is about to own me, and give me a swirly.  Even tossing grenades into the air, and exploding them next to it's head, like it shows in the Demo in the beginning of the game, barely hurts it.  i went through at LEAST 20 grenades, and STILL only got it to MAYBE half of it's damage.  I put the game on normal, and i am breezing through the levels, and mostly getting S-Rank.  I do have to say, I think it is possible, that the game is harder because I own Resident Evil 5.  The reason I say this... you can put up a "title" for your character to be known by.  one of the ones I started with, was BSAA.  Which is who Chris Redfield works for in RE5. So that, could be the reason i was getting OWNED... but i doubt it was the sole reason.

All that aside, the game is a fun game in my opinion.

Closure (A RANT, BE WARNED)

Okay, before i get started let me say two things... one, this review will be SHORT.  there is NO depth to this game at all.  Secondly... IN MY OPINION, the concept... is STUPID. This is why i think it is stupid... Wow, i run around picking up a light ball, or a KEY, and i can only carry one object.  but if i don't move the light ball, and i step in the "black area" that there was a floor, there isn't now.  Stupid.  so for example, one level you have to swim to get to the door, and make sure and not highlight ALL of the wall that you need to swim to, then jump over so you can get past it.  This game is Repetitive and boring...  Most of the puzzles take about 4 tries to understand what you are doing, and at that point, you realize... Why am I playing this game?  The black and white look gets tiresome to top it all off... it really is one of the most annoying puzzle games, i think i have ever played.  if i had to rate it out of 10, i would give it a 2... it seriously is that boring and annoying to me.  I personally feel that there is very little originality in this game.

Legacy of Kain series

So a friend of mine and I were talking a while ago about doing some classic video game Reviews...  Personally, I liked the whole Legacy of Kain Series even if the story line seemed not to mesh well, if you play the games.  Like for instance In Defiance you Travel back in time with one of the Two main characters in the Game, Raziel, and are back before a point where the "Father of all Vampires" Yanos Audron is dead... Kain has his Heart inside of him... Well needless to say, you Revive him, then kill him again.  The funniest part about this, is this is supposedly before legacy of kain: Blood omen 2 takes place, and in blood omen 2 he is walking around alive.  Things they should have done some fact checking on is all... lol...

Anyways,  That is about the LITTLEST complaint I have on this game series, other than I just didn't like blood omen, the First Legacy of Kain game.  It to me, was just stupid... had bad graphics for it's time, and just didn't appeal to me.  I really couldn't get into it.  I think it was probably because i started with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.  Now if you never were able to play this game... i feel like you missed out on something great.  ESPECIALLY for it's time.  This game was one of the first 3-d games to not only have environmental kills, but be one of the first games to allow you to throw weapons that you picked up from your environment in order to do stealth kills with them.

I played this game so much, that I used to have friends over and would stop looking at the screen for 5-10 minutes at a stretch and my friends were just watching in awe of what i was doing, because i would not even be touched.  The  Main character in this game, wasn't just a Vampire.  Raziel, was a Revived Spectral Vampire... He was much like the Wraiths' you would fight in the game, except the couldn't just drain life from things.  He did however SWALLOW SOULS...  yes just like Evil Dead "I'll Swallow your SOUL!".  Soul Reaver 2 was the next game that was released, As Far as I know.  Blood Omen 2 came out much later...  Blood Omen 2 was also a fun game, but i will get to that in a minute.  I loved The story of the Soul Reaver Games, and the Intrigue, and unanswered questions were left unanswered.

Blood Omen 2 was a good game because of the many powers and abilities you were able to gain.  My favorite was the charm ability... I loved using it on hapless humans, and making them kill themselves in interesting ways... for example there is one point where you have to have a human flip a lever, and when he does he cooks himself... CLASSY!  this game made me laugh over and over again with things like that.

Finally the end of the Story came with Legacy of Kain: Defiance.  In my opinion, this made it all culminate actually, and was probably the best game out of the series.  They took away the one bad thing about blood omen 2, the TERRIBLE block mechanics, which you almost had to have auto block on (i did).  and just gave Kain the ability to dodge via mist form.  Much cooler, and much more fluid for the combat.  This also made you realize why Kain was the way he was, and Why he had thrown Raziel into the Abyss, to turn him into the tatter corpse wraith soul stealing vampire that he was.  There was a sixth game in development, that was never created...  it was cancelled in 2004.  There is currently rumors that a Reboot of this series maybe created.  Personally if a reboot is made it would be awesome. If you want the Next best thing, Start playing Darksiders.  It is about as close to a modern Legacy of Kain game, that I have found.

Mortal Kombat 2011 and MK vs DC (aka Mortal Kombat 9, or THE Mortal Kombat)

For those of you who have not played the whole game, and are fans of Mortal Kombat... YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.  I seriously just played the game for the past 5 hours straight.  This game is awesome.  I cannot believe how well they did with merging all of the games, AND making something different as well.

If you have never played the game, it is a MESH, and REBOOT of the first 3 Mortal Kombat games.  What I like about it is that the story is still done well, even with the fact that reboots have become so popular recently.  In this case though... IT DIDN'T RUIN IT!  I seriously felt like I was 12 years old again playing Mortal Kombat II with blood again for the first time.  The combo system is kind of like that of MK vs DC.  The differences are that, you have the X-ray attacks. instead of just using your "Kombat Rage". You can now use the meter that was used for Counters in MK vs DC to do something useful.  So all and all the new one is great.

Personally, I liked MK vs DC.  I just thought they put the game together rather quickly.  22 characters to play 11 DC and 11 MK seemed pretty slim.  I think 15 and 15 would have been a lot better.  I think they just wanted to stick with a small core of people to play. me personally, I think having Cyrax or Smoke in this game would have been cool.. and on the DC side they should have had Green Arrow.  But if they would have made Green Arrow like he was in the Super Nintendo game "Justice League Task Force"  He would have been unstoppable... more so than they made The Joker.  Who by far is one of the best guys, besides Batman, on the DC side.

I was also disappointed, that a game made by WB interactive did NOT have Kevin Conroy voice Batman.  IF you don't know who that is he is the voice of batman in the old batman animated series in the 90s, the WB cartoon network justice league, and the 2 WB interactive Batman: Arkham Asylum/City games.  If you are odd ball like me for example. you will go try to support people like him by buying their game... hence why i loved the Evil Dead games.  I could give money to Bruce Campbell.  Anyways.. like is said in the beginning... BUY THE NEW MORTAL KOMBAT. The new "Komplete Edition" is $15 on amazon.com  totally worth it.

First Person Shooters

I am just going to throw this out there... I am not REALLY a FPS person.  I don't understand the craze of wasting $60 for a game, that honestly, all it is... is different weapons, and a different map layout.  there really isn't that MUCH originality in the FPS world.

Like for example... Time Shift.  it is an okay game by the people who made Half-Life Sierra.  This game has a cool concept with the whole slowing down time and stopping it.  I like that aspect, but the thing i don't like is that the game even on normal FORCES you to use that just to be able to beat the game.  They send so many guys after you and just to get to cover you have to stop time.  So overall, it could be a better game.

Bulletstorm, is in my opinion, one of the greatest first person shooters that has been made.  Bulletstorm forces you to kill the enemies in who are genetically altered prisoners on a prison planet.  The guns you get are original, for existance the mine launcher that bounces, or the "flail launcher" which shoots 2 grenades tied together with a chain.  There are over 100 "skillshots" or ways to kill enemies in the game.  The multiplayer forces you to help other players in order to accomplish the goals.
I enjoyed this game a lot.  I am just disappointed that there will not be a Sequel because of EA saying that they lost too much money.  The reason they lost too much money on it was the fact that people were downloading it illegally... uhm, doesn't that make it a GOOD game?  hopefully the sequel will be picked up but nobody knows for sure.

Megaman 9 and 10

Okay, I have been a fan of Megaman games since they came out 25 years ago and playing the original Megaman.  Seriously... i don't remember them being THIS HARD.  I remember them being kind of chince with the jumping like on Gutsman's stage but really... overall i don't remember them being vaguely impossible.  That is just on EASY. like seriously... getting shot one seems to take off almost a 1/8 of your life.  so if i get hit 8 times i am dead. what is the point of the life meter then?

When did it become to the point to get achievements, to make them so ridiculous it is not even worth it.  For example "True Megaman" is "beat all 8 stages without getting hurt only using the megabuster".  Is that worth a Gold PS3 trophy?  because i certainly don't think so.  At that point the game doesn't really even seem fun.  that would be like having non-stop played the megaman series, and having all the patterns memorized.  that is like in the original game fighting ice man, just shooting and knowing when he is going to land so you can time your megabuster at the perfect time so he lands on it everytime never getting touched.  Yes, i know of that trick since i used it.  but really it seems like i would have to just play it 8 hours a day just to get good again.

I do remember playing the games and getting good, like Megaman X for example... I could seriously play that game when it came out for super nintendo and play it all the way through on one life.  But i rarely would just use the megabuster, and i almost ALWAYS had to use at least one energy tank. I have only unlocked the Hadoken on Megaman X once, but it was so hard to use consistently because of the fact that you were pretty much locked in place when you used it, and if you got touched you lost it. so it was basically useless.

My third issue is this... when did it become so hard to recognize the pattern of who you are supposed to fight first?  I mean really, that was like the easiest thing to do in the old megaman games.  It was obvious who you could fight first.  and honestly, the original megaman was much simpler than these new versions.  I don't even remember X4, megaman 2 or 3 being this hard.  megaman 2 in my opinion was a JOKE compared to this game.  this is like Megaman X3 where you can barely even hurt the last guy.  I seriously followed a walkthrough on how to beat him, and that didn't even work.  what happened to playing games for fun? and just enjoying them.

Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition Gripes and Kudos

First I am going to start off with my praises to the add-ons.  I loved Big MT.  I thought it was the best written, and the fact that they got James Urbaniak, to do one of the Voices made it even better.  Especially since people say i look exactly like Dr. Venture.  Plus the announcements on the loud speaker are classic... like "Hey Guys! have you tried this intercom thing?! It makes you sound like some kind of SKKYYYY GOOODDD!" lol that was so awesome the first time I heard it.

The next thing I would like to Praise Bethesda for is the Honest Hearts Add-on.  It was nice to see Mormon's portrayed Positively for once in any form of media, especially since I am one.  I really think that someone at Bethesda who helped to Develop the game is Mormon, or a member of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints."

The one thing I didn't like about Honest Hearts is this... okay, you are in a post-apocalyptic world, where ammo is supposed to be scare... and uhm... the Native Americans don't use a Bow and Arrow?! really... REALLY?! come on guys... that doesn't seem very post-apocalyptic wild west to me. most people probably don't know this, but a Bow and Arrow can go through Military grade KEVLAR.  so why not use it in a post-apocalyptic world against guys in metal armor?  just seems kind of odd.

The other thing i didn't like about the add-ons... no REALLY good perks other than Grunt, and The survivalist one that turns guys into blood sausage... i mean honestly, you can pretty much own anything in new vegas on very hard if you take 4 perks... and one to just support them.  1st BETTER CRITICALS, Second Hand Loader, Third The Professional, 4th Bloody mess. Here is why... Jury rigger to support repairing your equipment is nice, but not needed. if you run around sneaking using the Ranger Sequioa, which you can get from Cheif Hanlon at Camp Golf after he kills himself, you are literally with sneak criticals doing an extra 100% damage.  the SWC rounds work as armor piercing rounds.  you will literally be shooting death claws in the head on VERY HARD in the lonesome road, and killing them instantly.  if you want some V.A.T.S. support just make sure and take sniper and gunslinger... and you will basically be unstoppable. you can run around in light armor and own everything.

After playing the add-ons... i honestly found them to be pointless. :/  rather sad to be honest.  Wow... i can cap out at level 50 and have 100 in all my skills. :/ where is the challenge?  just what i think.

Paying monthly

So I have to say, I am not a fan of this concept.  Like those of you who play world of warcraft for hours on end... yeah, not for me.  The reason i bring this up. is because i looked at the new lord of the rings game... and EA has put out another crappy pay-online game much like Star wars.  I am sorry, but i am not going to pay a monthly fee to play your game... nor am i in the middle of the game going to buy AMMO to make your profit margins higher.

Personally, i think that is exactly what this is... when you pay monthly for a game you are paying to make their profit margins higher... If you are going to do that, why don't i get the option to pay a game i PAID for, offline??  i mean really half the time you play online you get people either screaming obscenities non-stop, or you get people who really are the type who suicide themselves constantly.  I am not looking for either of those. can I just play a game and not pay for it after i am done with it?  I mean to be honest, If I continued paying out for all the games that I have to play, a monthly fee for each one... i would be ruined.  who would be able to afford games at that point?  just a question i don't think people have really considered.

If you are not subscribed.

So I have been a little lazy with playing around with my blog so forgive me.  The reason for that is that I just started my masters program and am trying to keep up with the course work, and make sure it is done properly.  Most of my assignments are due on Wednesday nights, so I am thinking that most of my Reviews are going to be put up on Saturday.  That gives me a few days to play the game and give a solid analysis of what I think is good, or bad about a game.
